Jack Sparrow, The Mad Hatter, Edward Scissorhands, Jack Sparrow, Jack Sparrow, etc… We all know Johnny Depp is a very versatile actor, but did you know that he has a good amount of horror movies under his belt? Including, his film debut?
Here is a fun list of Horror movies featuring and starring Johnny Depp!
*Please note* Films are listed in alphabetical order. Streaming availability is posted according to publish date. Please check your local listings and the linked Just Watch page for streaming updates!
Dark Shadows (2012)
A captive vampire, Barnabas Collins, is let loose and returns to his ancestral home, where his dysfunctional descendants are in need of his protection from a long-lost love sick witch.
Directed by Tim Burton, Dark Shadows is a tongue-in-cheek reboot of the classic show from the late 60s and early 70s Dark Shadows: The Vampire Curse which was completely ahead of its time. The original took itself way more seriously. It doesn’t have too much in common with the original other than the lead character’s a vampire named Barnabas Collins.

Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare (1991)
In this final chapter of the Nightmare on Elm, Freddy Krueger returns again to haunt the nightmares of Springwood’s last remaining teenager, and of a young woman whose connection to Krueger could mean the end of Freddy…or is it?
Johnny Depp doesn’t have a huge role in this but his part is memorable. Since the first Nightmare on Elm Street was Depp’s first role seems fitting he would make an appearance in the “last” film. He plays himself in quite a fun cameo and if you’re a Nightmare fan and haven’t seen it yet you should watch it!

From Hell (2001)
In London during the late 1800s, a troubled detective investigates the sick and twisted murders of Jack the Ripper.
This film is not only terrifying but so visually compelling. Wonderful performances from Depp and an incredible supporting cast, Heather Graham, Ian Holm, Robbie Coltrane, and more!

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Nancy must uncover the dark truth hidden by her parents after she and her friends become prey to a serial killer with a bladed glove. He comes in their dreams and no one knows how to stop him.
Directed by the unparalleled Wes Craven, Nightmare on Elm Street had the pleasure of introducing Johnny Depp to the silver screen and in turn, Depp became an important part of horror history!

The Ninth Gate (1999)
An unscrupulous rare book dealer is tasked with finding the last two copies of an ancient demon text. He gets drawn into a supernatural conspiracy with supernatural the likes he did not expect.
Not my favorite on the list. However, strong supporting performances from Frank Langella and Lena Olin! For any rare experts out there you’ll find some scenes humorous as there’s a lot of smoking cigarettes and drinking of red wine around priceless antique books happening in this movie.

Streaming: STARZ, STARZ with Amazon Prime Video and The Roku Channel, and available for rental.
Secret Window (2004)
Depp plays a successful writer in the midst of an agonizing divorce (sound familiar) who is hunted at his isolated lake cabin by someone who accuses him of plagiarism.
Directed by David Koepp, Depp plays a man that is unraveling and isn’t sure about what’s real anymore.

Sleepy Hollow (1999)
In this retelling of the classic story about the legendary Ichabod Crane, he is sent to Sleepy Hollow to examine the decapitations of three townspeople. The assumed culprit is the fabled specter, The Headless Horseman.
Directed by Tim Burton, Sleepy Hollow is deeply haunting and like most Burton films the film is a site to be seen. Depp plays the lead protagonist Ichabod Crane with stellar supporting performances from Christina Ricci, Miranda Richardson (love her!), Michael Gambon, Christopher Walken, and more!

Streaming: Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+, EPIX, DirecTV, and available for rental.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon of Fleet Street (2007)
Depp stars in the legendary tale of a barber who returns to London in the 1940s after an unjust incarceration. Barber takes on a new identity and is hellbent on revenge for the death of his beloved wife by forming a sinister alliance with his fellow tenant, Mrs. Lovett.
Another gem directed by Tim Burton! This is one of my top choices on this list. Depp is just so good in the role of Sweeney Todd and this story is just so horrific and heart-wrenching at the same time. It’ll give you all the feels.

Streaming: HBO MAX, DirecTV, and available for rental.
Tusk (2014)
An arrogant podcaster (Justin Long) goes to Canada to question a mysterious recluse who has a rather disturbing fondness for walruses.
Directed by Kevin Smith and produced by A24 (they do some incredible films), Tusk is a very disturbing look into the psyche of an unwell person and what they’ll do to fulfill their reality. Depp plays a pivotal supporting role in this film that is really enjoyable. It was great to see Depp take a backseat and really dig into this character piece. *WARNING* Tusk is so disturbing. One of my top pics on this list but I’ll tell you this film stayed with me for days…

Streaming: Fubo, Showtime, Showtime with Amazon Prime Video and The Roku Channel, Kanopy, DirecTV, and available for rental.
BONUS: A Horror Short Film starring Johnny Depp
The Black Ghiandola (2017)
This horror short film follows a young man risking his life to save a young girl he’s in love with from a zombie apocalypse.
This very special horror short movie is presented by the Make A Film Foundation. Created by Tamika Lamison in 2006 the foundation’s goal is to help children and teens with life-threatening diseases fulfill their dreams of creating a movie with some of Hollywood’s biggest talent. A truly rewarding platform in my opinion similarly to Make A Wish but more specific.
The Black Ghiandola also stars Laura Dern, David Lynch, J.K. Simmons, and more! Sam Raimi is also one of the directors!
