Heard Of This: Intruder

How Have I Never Heard of This?
The 80s horror movie: Intruder

We have all said it at some point; How have I never heard of this? That random movie you scroll past that looks like a ton of fun. You may ask your friends, look it up on Facebook, or just roll the dice and give it a try. Usually, you will find one person that says, “I had never heard of it until last year.” And we all know that one person; “Oh, I saw that when I was a kid. No big deal.” I’m looking at you, Greg.

This was the case with the 1989 slasher film, Intruder, written and directed by Scott Spiegel, who co-wrote Evil Dead II. The film takes place in a grocery store overnight, as the employees re-price the merchandise and do inventory. After banding together to kick out a co-worker’s deranged ex-boyfriend, the night crew of the Walnut Lake Market soon find themselves being hunted in their own store!

Intruder is well acted with just the right amount of camp to it. The film is very amusing, while still having considerable moments of terror. This slasher is definitely now up there on our top list! A special shout out to the special effects department: Burt Davidson, Stephanie Patino, Sean Rodgers, and Roger Sides. The special effects definitely hold up and in some cases are better than a lot we have seen in recent years.

Elizabeth Cox as Jennifer Ross in “The Intruder”

The film stars Elizabeth Cox (Night of the Creeps). Cox is very impressive in this role and the writing gives her character strength. She’s a badass and takes charge! Also starring, Dan Hicks (Evil Dead II), Eugene Robert Glazer (24), and Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead). Yes, that Sam Raimi! HOW HAVE WE NEVER HEARD OF THIS?! The Intruder also has appearances by Bruce Campbell and Ted Raimi being his Ted Raimiest!

I am truly surprised that I had never heard of this movie before, and that it has not gotten its proper respect. I highly recommend giving it a watch.

Intruder is available to stream on Shudder, AMC+, Tubi, Pluto TV, Directv, and rental.

Youtuber SlasherPepper made a great video of behind-the-scenes pictures that he received directly from Elizabeth Cox!
