The Devil’s in the Details:
Halloween Orbeez Decor
To say that I love Halloween would be an understatement. I truly adore everything about the season, the change in season (pretty much the only thing I miss about the Midwest and the East Coast). I love the costumes, decorations, and the Halloween songs. (There are more Halloween-based songs out there than you might think! Move over Christmas!) And call me basic, I don’t care, I love EVERYTHING pumpkin flavored.
Growing up, my mother was no Martha Stewart, but she was crafty as hell, and a lot of that love of crafting has rubbed off on me. I, too am no Martha Stewart, but my husband has taken to calling me “Morticia Stewart” during the fall spooky season. Check out this fun and easy DIY project using Orbeez to make some Halloween Decor magic!
First things first:
- What are Orbeez? Orbeez are clear or colorful water beads primarily made of sodium polyacrylate and food-grade coloring to create vibrant colors.
- Orbeez can absorb several hundred times their weight in water and expand into wet and squishy spheres. They can be used for sensory treatment, home decor, and creative arts.
- Orbeez are biodegradable and environmentally friendly!
- WARNING: Be careful using Orbeez around small children and animals. Orbeez can be a choking hazard or cause an intestinal or bowel obstruction. If swallowed, call your local poison control or emergency room.
Orbeez Halloween Decor
If you haven’t heard about these little guys, do yourself a favor and buy some!! I initially saw these on a TikTok video for Christmas decor and immediately thought, “I NEED these for Halloween!!” These little guys arrive in a package in microform. You can get about 70,000 for under $10 on Amazon and will not need 70,000! Make sure to purchase the clear Orbeez. This is an easy-level DIY that could be fun for the whole family! (For older children only – 6 and up)
Step 1: Soak your desired amount of Orbeez in water for about 4 hours and watch them grow to the size of a medium pearl.
Step 2: Once the Orbeez has fully expanded, you can fill any clear container with a mixture of Orbeez and other festive spooky things. I had decorative glass containers on hand, but I also used an empty wine bottle.
I went to the Dollar Store and got a combo of tiny skeletons, bones, bats, and ping-pong eyeballs. It’s best to get plastic items that won’t dissolve in water.
Step 3: You will mix back and forth between the Orbeez and spooky festive knickknacks. Once you are close to the top, you will slowly pour water into the container. The water will make the clear Orbeez disappear to make it look like the objects are floating throughout the container. I then like to add floating candles on top; this will help press down the Orbeez in the water.
I used ping pong balls I found at the Dollar Tree for my eyeball container. Since these are filled with air and will float, I cut small holes (at least 2 for the water to come in and another for the air to exit out of) and pre-soaked them in water to ensure they wouldn’t just float up to the top.
This Orbeez Halloween decoration is great as centerpieces on tables or as spooky decor. The best part is you can keep reusing the Orbeez for different holidays, or you can let them dry out to save and reuse them the following season. You need to re-soak them in water when ready to use them again!
Happy Halloween!
