Knock Knock. Who’s there? Do not answer it! This isn’t a joke; it’s a home invasion horror movie. If you are not expecting company, whoever is on the other side of the door is not your friend. Watch out, or you’re going to end up dead and in your closet later that evening!
Home invasion horror films can be some of the scariest movies because they are the most realistic! No ghosts, no undead serial killer. Just someone that wants what is in your house. Unfortunately, most of the time, that is you!

Black Christmas (1974 & 2006): Christmas is here for a sorority at Hawthorne college. The night becomes less than silent when a deranged killer starts to violently stalk them in their sorority house!
The original and remake follow a similar story with a few differences. The 1974 version stars Olivia Hussey (Romeo & Juliet 1968) & Margot Kidder. 2006 stars Michelle Trachtenberg (Buffy The Vampire Slayer) and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World).

The Collector (2009): Knowing the residents of a wealthy home are going out of town, their handyman decides to break in and steal a valuable jewel. What he finds is that he is not the only one there to collect something or someone.
This film is a twist on the good ole home invasion movie. If you want a truly surprising experience, I suggest skipping the description and trailer. Just go straight into the movie.

Don’t Breathe (2016): A group of friends breaks into the home of a blind army veteran. What they find is that, just because he is old and def, does not mean he is defenseless.
This is a home invasion movie that takes a turn for the invaders. Don’t Breathe packs some punches and surprises.

Hush (2016): A def woman secludes herself in a house in the woods, to write her next book. She is then tormented by a masked man who shows up at her door.
Oh, man, this one is really good! This film was written in a very smart way and is an underrated gem. Directed by Mike Flanagan, (Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House, Doctor Sleep)

Incident In A Ghostland (2018): A mother and her two teenage daughters travel to the house that has recently been left to them. When they unknowingly cross paths with a group of serial killers, the danger follows them home.
This film went to places we did not see coming and will not spoil for you now. It is one of our favorites on this list.

Knock Knock (2015): Keanu Reeves stars as a man who tries to help two girls out stranded in a rainstorm. When they won’t leave, his life gets turned upside down by their evil intent.
This is a classic story of why you do not open your door for two hot girls.
Written and directed by Eli Roth.

The Last House On The Left (2009): A group of criminals meets up with a local girl in the small town they are staying in. Things go south and they end up leaving her for dead. When it turns out that the owners of the house are the parents of the girl, the tables quickly turn.
This is a rare case where I prefer the remake over the original.
Starring Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Monica Potter (Saw), and Riki Lindhome (Knives Out).

The Owners (2020): A group of friends (why is it always a group of friends? Just go to the movies or something) try to grab a quick score from a mansion while the owners are out. Misinformation, in-fighting, and an unexpected twist turn this heist deadly.
This film has a real message about not trusting who you know.
Starring Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) and Sylvester McCoy, (The 7th Doctor in Doctor Who)

The People Under The Stairs (1991): A young boy and two men find themselves trapped inside the “creepy house on the street.” What they find inside is nothing compared to the horrors that lie below.
The People Under the Stairs will stay with you for a while. This is a classic Wes Craven film, starring Ving Rhames (Pulp Fiction), Everett McGill (Twin Peaks), Wendy Robie (Twin Peaks), and Brandon Quintin Adams (The Sandlot).

The Purge (2013): Every year there is an official “Purge” night. All crime is legal for 24 hours, including murder. A family, thinking they are safe inside their home, ends up harboring a man on the run from a psychotic group of killers.
This premise was so original that it opened up a whole world and franchise.

The Strangers (2008): A couple plans on having a relaxing vacation in a rural home. When they open the door to the knock of a stranger, they inadvertently invite a night of terror when the stranger and her friends invade the house.
Oooph, this movie still gives me the chills. If a woman asks if Tamara is home, call the police.
Starring Liv Tyler (Armageddon, The Lord of the Rings) and Scott Speedman (Underworld).

When a Stranger Calls (1979): A babysitter gets an ominous call while watching two children. When the calls keep coming every 15 minutes, she gets the police to trace the call. They soon find out where the call is coming from…
I thought I knew the story already, but there is so much more. This film keeps you asking, “Where is this going?” and trust me, it gets there!

Val (2021): A criminal on the run breaks into the home of a high-class escort to evade the police, and realizes nothing is what it seems.
This horror-comedy film is filled with suspenseful cat and mouse! You won’t see what’s coming from Val. Produced by Social House Films who are one of our favorite independent horror creators now. Check out our interview with them and we have also featured several of their horror short films!

You’re Next (2011): Cris brings his new girlfriend, Erin, home to meet his family at their estate. When a group of masked men break in and hunt them down, they soon find that Erin is not as helpless as everyone thinks.
This horror movie has a great concept!
Directed by Adam Wingard (Godzilla vs. Kong, Blair Witch (2016), and Death Note) and don’t miss a chance to see Barbara Crampton! We love her!
