It’s Hispanic Heritage Month and we’re celebrating some of our favorite Spanish filmmakers! Spanish horror has a way of digging into your worst fears and often comes from a place of deep spirituality that has a rawness like no other. There’s a tangible grittiness and vulnerability to Hispanic horror films that’s so appealing to us. Check out these great Spanish horror movies from incredible Hispanic filmmakers that go from paranormal to slasher that include some of our favorites from Guillermo del Toro, Robert Rodriguez, and more!

32 Malasana Street Spanish Horror Movies

32 Malasana (2020): Originally titled Malasaña 32 and inspired by a true story. Set in 1970s Spain, a family moves into a seemingly perfect flat to start over and is quickly faced with their worst fears. Spanish with English subtitles.

This Spanish horror movie is very well done! It felt like it could belong in the Conjuring universe. It’s a fun ride! Lots of scenes with really dark spaces which is one of my worst fears. lol

Crimson Peak Movie Poster Spanish Horror Movie director Guillermo del Toro

Crimson Peak (2015): After a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. She tries to escape the ghosts of her past and is swept away to a house of terror.

This film encapsulates the beauty of a Guillermo del Toro film that you’ll find to be a moody and haunting mystery. Starring Jessica ChastainMia Wasikowska, and the always foxy Tom Hiddleston. (No offense Daniel)

The Devil's Backbone directed by Guillero del Toro movie poster

The Devil’s Backbone (2001): A 12-year old boy becomes orphaned as his father dies in the Spanish Civil War. Carlos is brought to a sinister boys’ orphanage and he discovers the school is not only haunted but he must uncover its many dark mysteries.

This film is where my love affair with Guillermo del Toro began! The Devil’s Backbone is truly haunting! Spanish with English subtitles.

Don't Breathe directed by Fede Alvarez Movie Poster Spanish Horror movies

Don’t Breathe (2016): Three young thieves break into the home of a seemingly gentle blind man hoping to come away with a fortune and soon discover terror is awaiting them instead.

Directed by Fede Alvarez this film will STAY with you after viewing! Super suspenseful with jaw-dropping and suspenseful good times!

The Faculty Movie Poster directed by Robert Rodriguez

The Faculty (1998): A small group of high-school kids begin to witness strange happenings to the faculty and are confronted with a terrifying possibility that their small town is being taken over.

From director Robert Rodriguez and writer Kevin Williamson, The Faculty is a classic that bares viewing and repeat viewing if you’ve already seen it! There are still moments in this movie that I think about on a regular basis! Super chilling! A Star-studded cast including Jordana Brewster, Salma Hayek, Josh Hartnett, Clea DuVall, Piper Laurie, Elijah Wood, and more!

From Dusk Till Dawn Movie Poster directed by Robert Rodriguez

From Dusk till Dawn (1996): Two criminal brothers (George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino) and their hostages seek temporary refuge at a truck stop/bikini bar unbeknownst to them inhabited by vampires. As day turns into night, they’re all taken on a wild ride and fight to make it to dawn.

Directed by Robert Rodriguez and written by Quentin Tarantino From Dusk till Dawn is a super fun, thrilling vampire horror classic! Also, tarring the lovely Salma Hayek, Danny Trejo, Harvey Keitel, Juliette Lewis, and more! Rodriguez gave Hayek her first lead role in Desperado!

Into the Dark Culture Shock Spanish Horror Movies

Into the Dark: Culture Shock (2019): Marisol (Martha Higareda), a young Mexican woman in pursuit of the American Dream, crosses illegally into the United States, only to find herself in an American nightmare.

Culture Shock is part of the incredible Into the Dark series by Blumhouse. Written and directed by Gigi Saul Guerrero this film is a social commentary and a deep look into immigration in the United States. This film is a horrifying experience you’ll take with you. Also starring Barbara Crampton who we LOVE at MTH! Keep an eye out for Martha Higareda. She’s going to be big.

The Orphanage produced by Guillermo del Toro Spanish Horror

The Orphanage (2007): Laura brings her family back to her old childhood residence, which used to be an orphanage for handicapped children. Her son Simón begins to communicate with “imaginary” new friends and the terror begins.

Executive produced by Guillermo del Toro and directed by J.A. Bayona The Orphanage is a truly chilling and mysterious journey. Fun fact, The Orphanage open at Cannes in 2007 and received a 10-minute standing ovation. Highly recommend this Spanish horror movie! Spanish with English subtitles.

Planet Terror Movie Poster directed by Robert Rodriguez Grindhouse

Planet Terror (2007): An experimental bio-weapon is released and turns thousands into flesh-eating monsters, it’s up to a motley group of survivors to stop them and the scientist behind its release.

Directed by Robert Rodriguez this Grindhouse film is an EXHILARATING, FUN, and TERRIFYING from start to finish! Starring Freddy Rodríguez, Rose McGowen, Josh Brolin, Bruce Willis, Marley Shelton, Naveen Andrews, Fergie, Quentin Tarantino, and more!

The Platform Movie Poster Spanish horror movies

The Platform (2019): A futuristic prison where the amount of food you get depends on your level and the decency of the prisoners above. How far can this twisted class system go?

THIS FILM IS OUTSTANDING!!! It’s a suspenseful social commentary on society and you don’t know what’s going to happen next. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! This is a Spanish horror movie available dubbed in English or with subtitles.

REC Movie Poster Spanish Horror film

REC (2007): A ambitious journalist and a cameraman shadow a team of firemen and happen upon a most unexpected night where they’re forced to quarantine due to an unknown virus.

The American film Quarantine is based on this movie. We really enjoyed this! It’s a scary look at what would potentially happen during any other viral outbreak. There are three more films in this franchise we’re anxious to watch soon! Spanish with English subtitles.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019): Based on the Children’s book of the same name this film takes place on Halloween 1968. Stella and her friends meet a strange drifter, Ramón, and uncover an ominous notebook of stories that come to life.

Produced by Guillermo del Toro this movie is a lot of fun. There’s one story, in particular, that is completely horrific to me. I’ll give you a guess there’s an insect with eight legs involved…

Shrew's Nest Movie Poster Spanish Horror Movies

Shrew’s Nest (2014): Original titled Musarañas. Set in 1950s Madrid, an religious and agoraphobic woman, Montse, has raised her 18-year-old sister who’s not afraid of the world. When an incident with the upstairs neighbor brings chaos into their lives true terror awaits them.

This film is superb! The acting in it is phenomenal and the events that take place in this film are completely horrifying because there’s no scary boogeyman. The evil is humanity. Starring Macarena Gómez (Who we love from 30 Coins – she’s an incredible talent!) and directed by Juanfer Andrés and Esteban Roel. Spanish with English subtitles.

Slugs Movie Poster 80s Spanish Horror Movies

Slugs (1988): In a small town mutant slugs take over and cause complete havoc on a small community.

Originally titled “Slugs, Muerte Viscosa“. You’ll laugh about some of the dialogue. These people just seem to yell at each other and be super crabby but Slugs is so much 80s fun and there are great effects! Directed by Juan Piquer Simón (who goes by J.P. Simon in the credits).

Terrified Movie Poster directed by Demian Rugna Spanish Horror Movies

Terrified (2017): When unexplainable events occur in a small neighborhood in Buenos Aires, an expert specializing in the paranormal, her colleague, and an ex-law enforcement officer decide to scrutinize further.

Directed by Demián Rugna, this Argentinian film will have your mouth dropping! I thought about it for a few days even after we had seen the film. We’re anxious to see what this director/writer has coming next! Spanish with English subtitles.

Virus: 32 (2022): A mother desperately tries to protect her daughter from a rapidly spreading virus that transforms people into uber-violent, fast ravenous hunters. She figures out that after each attack they take 32 seconds to recover their strength before they can strike again.

This film is very TENSE! Well developed story and just plain good! This Argentinian Spanish film is subtitled in Engish and gives 28 Days Later meets Dawn of the Dead vibes.

30 Coins (2020): An exiled priest, a veterinarian, and the mayor of a remote village in Spain try to save the world from dark forces determined to take over.

Originally titled 30 Monedas, this series is SO MUCH FUN! You won’t be able to stop watching! In fact, the first episode…I’m just going to say we’ve NEVER seen anything like it and we’ve seen a lot of horror shows and movies! If you’re looking to spend time with suspense, horror, drama, romance, and comedy including an incredibly talented cast you’ve found your show! Starring Eduard Fernández, Megan Montaner, Miguel Ángel Silvestre, and Macarena Gómez (Shrew’s Nest – LOVE HER), Spanish subtitled in English.
