Take a Stab at Horror!
A Beginners Guide: Slashers

Written by Amber Wines

Check out these horror-comedy slashers!

Whether you are a horror aficionado or have never really gotten into the genre, I truly believe there is something for everyone in the horror realm. Comedy tends to be the universal ice breaker. Being able to have a moment of levity in any horror movie is fantastic and helps the viewer either have a moment to breathe a bit or lets the audience in on an inside joke, like “Yes, we know this is a crazy situation, the characters think so too.” There are so many amazing horror comedies or horror films out there. This list isn’t a “Best Of”, but more of a sampling of awesome slasher movies to help guide you into the genre till you find yourself laughing yourself to death!

(Rating system is 1-5, 5 Being the scariest. But all of these titles are on the milder side of horror if you are an avid horror watcher)

Jessica Rothe in Happy Death Day

HAPPY DEATH DAY
A college sorority girl is forced to relive the day of her murder over and over again in a time loop. If she can discover who her killer is and survive the day, the loop will be broken.

Think Groundhog’s Day, but with a lot more blood and gore. Plenty of jumps and scares, but a bit tongue in cheek too. Fun fact: the baby mascot mask was designed by the same person who designed Ghost Face for Scream.

Taissa Farmiga, Nina Dobrev, and Thomas Middleditch in The Final Girls

THE FINAL GIRLS
While mourning the loss of her mother, a famous Scream Queen from the 1980s, Max and her friends are pulled into the world of her mother’s most iconic movie. Now reunited, they must band together to try and defeat the movie’s killer.

For anyone new to horror, the term “Final Girl” refers to the final (usually a girl) person left alive for the villain to kill (think Jamie Lee Curtis in Halloween). This film is fun because it plays on the tropes used in slasher films while also playing off what “real people” would try to do in those types of situations. It breaks the rules while still following all of them.

Neve Campbell in Scream

SCREAM
A year after the murder of Sydney’s mother, she and her friends are being killed off one by one by a new evil, who mixes in classic horror movies as part of their terrorizing.

This series has become a classic in its own right, but the basis of the movie was actually to parody other slasher movies in the genre. Unlike a lot of parodies, this one is packed full of jumps and scares, but it never shies away from pointing out the obvious mishaps that many characters make in horror movies.
